A Motorcycle Startup Worth Watching: BBM Is Preparing to Build in Europe

BBM Motorcycles is preparing a European production base for a new generation of electric bikes: lighter, fast-charging, modular and built by an experienced motorcycle and industrial team. The project is now moving from engineering toward production and opening its next investment chapter in Europe.

Two friends of mine are building a motorcycle company in Europe, and I think this is one of those projects worth paying attention to.

The company is BBM Motorcycles. They are developing a new generation of electric motorcycles, but what caught my attention is that their approach is quite different from the typical electric-bike startup.

The idea is not simply to take an existing motorcycle format, replace the engine with a battery and electric motor and call it innovation. They started by looking at the reasons many experienced riders still do not want an electric motorcycle.

Weight is one of them. Charging time is another. Range is still an issue, particularly if you want to use a motorcycle for something more than commuting. Then there is design, residual value and the simple fact that many electric motorcycles do not feel like objects that traditional motorcycle enthusiasts actually want to own.

BBM is trying to address all of those problems at platform level.

Their target motorcycle is around 200 kg, which puts it much closer to the weight of a conventional ICE motorcycle than many existing electric alternatives. They are targeting more than 220 km of range and a DC fast-charging architecture designed to reach 80% in less than 15 minutes. According to their current specification, around 100 km of usable range can be added in approximately nine minutes.

That charging figure is particularly interesting.

For electric cars, a 30- or 40-minute stop is annoying but often manageable. For a motorcycle, it changes the experience much more. If you are riding through Europe, stopping for almost an hour every couple of hundred kilometres makes the bike difficult to use in the same way as a petrol motorcycle.

Nine or fifteen minutes is completely different. That starts to look much more like a normal motorcycle stop: park, have a coffee, check the route and continue.

The performance is also positioned as a proper motorcycle rather than an urban EV. BBM is targeting around 94 hp, a top speed around 190 km/h and more than 200 km of range, while keeping the complete motorcycle below approximately 220 kg.

Another part I find clever is the battery philosophy.

Most people discuss battery capacity, but relatively few discuss what happens to an electric motorcycle after seven or ten years.

A petrol motorcycle can be maintained almost indefinitely. Engines can be rebuilt, suspension replaced, electronics repaired and parts upgraded. Some motorcycles actually become more valuable with age.

With electric vehicles, the battery can become the economic life limit of the entire machine.

BBM is therefore working around a battery concept intended to have a long service life while remaining repairable and upgradeable. They also plan to retain ownership and maintenance records around the battery and vehicle.

If they can execute that properly, it could become more important than another few kilometres of theoretical range.

I would much rather buy an electric motorcycle knowing that ten years from now the battery can be repaired or upgraded than own a machine where the most expensive component is effectively sealed and disposable.

There is also a broader engineering logic behind the project.

BBM is not planning one motorcycle followed by an entirely separate second motorcycle and then another one.

They are building a common modular platform.

The same core architecture can then support different models, body styles, colours and configurations. The company sees customisation as an important part of the product rather than an afterthought.

This makes a lot of sense to me.

Motorcycle customers are different from car customers. A huge percentage of owners eventually change something: mirrors, seat, bars, suspension, luggage, wheels, bodywork, paint or dozens of small details.

Motorcycles are personal objects.

So instead of trying to eliminate that behaviour, BBM is designing a platform where variation and customisation are part of the underlying product strategy.

It also makes sense commercially.

Building several completely independent motorcycles is incredibly expensive. Every new platform creates additional engineering, testing, homologation, tooling, components and inventory.

A modular architecture potentially allows them to build several visually and functionally different motorcycles while sharing a substantial amount of engineering underneath.

That puts it into a much more realistic premium-motorcycle category rather than the exotic pricing that has historically limited many electric motorcycles.

But compare it with what people already spend on premium European motorcycles, and the proposition begins to make sense — particularly if operating and maintenance costs end up being substantially lower.

What I also like is that the project is moving beyond the stage of simply designing an attractive prototype.

Their plan is to establish an actual European production operation.

The manufacturing model is based around in-house product development and proprietary software, established European suppliers together with selected Asian supply-chain partners, and semi-robotised lean-cell assembly.

That distinction matters.

There are many mobility startups that are essentially branding companies. They design a logo and bodywork, outsource almost everything else and call themselves manufacturers.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that model, but it is not the same thing as trying to build an industrial capability.

BBM wants to develop the platform, software and product internally while controlling final assembly and creating a scalable manufacturing operation in Europe.

Their planned commercial model is also broader than simply selling motorcycles online.

They expect to combine direct-to-consumer sales with dealers and B2B partnerships. The longer-term model also includes limited editions, digital services and aftermarket opportunities around the motorcycles.

I particularly like the dealer element.

The idea that every vehicle company should eliminate dealers became fashionable during the first Tesla era, but motorcycles are different.

People want to see them.

They want to sit on them.

They want test rides.

They want somebody locally who knows the machine.

And when something goes wrong, they want somewhere to take it.

A combination of D2C and a carefully selected dealer network therefore seems considerably more realistic than pretending motorcycles have become another purely online product.

There is already some evidence of demand as well.

The team came into the project with more than 60 premium custom motorcycle builds behind them. Their electric project subsequently generated committed buyers and close to 200 early reservations shortly after the website launch, while initial dealers also began engaging with the company.

They have also been deliberately targeting a relatively narrow audience rather than pretending that an electric motorcycle is immediately suitable for everyone.

Their own customer segmentation includes experienced riders interested in innovation, younger environmentally motivated customers, performance-oriented riders and people looking at total ownership costs for longer-distance riding.

I think that is sensible.

Startups often make the mistake of claiming their addressable customer is essentially every human on Earth.

It is usually much better to build something a smaller group of people really wants and expand from there.

BBM itself describes this as a micro-niche strategy used as a launchpad.

The go-to-market plan is similarly focused on Europe first, with test rides in major European cities, participation in motorcycle and lifestyle events and partnerships around distribution and customer acquisition.

Of course, none of this means building a new motorcycle company is easy.

Quite the opposite.

Automotive and motorcycle manufacturing is one of the hardest businesses you can possibly choose.

A prototype can work beautifully and production can still go wrong.

Supplier delays happen.

Certification takes longer than expected.

Tooling costs increase.

Components have to work not once but thousands of times.

Then comes warranty, spare parts, logistics and servicing.

Moving from a prototype to hundreds and then thousands of vehicles is where most mobility startups discover whether they have actually built a company.

But that is also why I find BBM interesting.

There is already real motorcycle-building experience behind the project, and the wider team brings together knowledge from motorcycle engineering, industrial operations, aerospace, manufacturing and high-end consumer businesses.

They are now reaching exactly the stage where the project becomes especially interesting: moving from product development towards homologation, industrialisation and European manufacturing.

And that requires capital.

My friends are currently attracting investment to support the next phase of the company and the establishment of the production operation in Europe.

I am deliberately not publishing the private details of their financing round here. Anyone seriously interested can discuss the investment structure, documentation, milestones and terms directly with the team.

But I wanted to put the project in front of my own audience because there may be people reading this who, like me, genuinely like motorcycles and would enjoy being involved in building something physical and ambitious.

There are plenty of opportunities to invest in another SaaS product, another AI wrapper or another fintech platform.

There are considerably fewer opportunities to help finance a team attempting to build an actual motorcycle, establish a manufacturing operation in Europe and create a new industrial brand from scratch.

If motorcycles, electric mobility, manufacturing or automotive technology are areas you understand or simply care about, BBM is worth having a conversation with.

The project is ambitious, the engineering proposition is interesting, and the next stage is the part where good investors and good industrial partners can actually make a difference.
